Job Overview:
The Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing and coding medical records, including diagnoses, procedures, and services, using standardized coding systems. This role ensures accurate and efficient processing of medical data for billing, insurance claims, and compliance with healthcare regulations. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, knowledge of medical terminology, and expertise in coding systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review patient records and documentation to identify diagnoses, procedures, and services.
  • Ensure that medical records are complete, accurate, and properly documented.
  • Assign appropriate codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services using coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • Enter coded data into electronic health records (EHR) and billing systems.
  • Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations and payer requirements.
  • Verify that all codes are supported by documentation and meet payer guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit claims for insurance reimbursement based on coded data.
  • Resolve discrepancies and denials related to coding and billing issues.
  • Collaborate with billing and accounts receivable teams to address coding-related queries.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date coding records and documentation.
  • Generate reports on coding accuracy, productivity, and compliance.
  • Stay current with updates and changes to coding guidelines, healthcare regulations, and payer requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Work closely with healthcare providers, medical staff, and billing departments to clarify documentation and coding issues.
  • Provide support and guidance on coding practices and standards.

Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, or a related field is preferred.
  • Certification from a recognized coding organization, such as the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), is required (e.g., CPC, CCS).
  • Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in medical coding.
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software is preferred.

Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS).
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in coding and data entry.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and coding/billing software.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with healthcare providers and billing teams.
  • High level of professionalism and integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and handle sensitive information confidentially.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time 8-10hrs.

Working Conditions:
  • This role typically operates in a standard office environment.
  • Some travel may be required for meetings or training.
  • Occasional extended hours may be necessary to meet deadlines.
